Jeremy Irons plays the idealistic Father Gabriel, while Robert De Niro is the former slave trader whose journey towards redemption brings him into the heart of the mission. With screenplay by Robert Bolt, majestic backdrops (it won Best Cinematography at the 39th Cannes Film Festival) and an unforgettable score by Ennio Morricone, The Mission is both epic and deeply intimate, raising difficult questions about faith, power, colonialism and moral responsibility.
