Paired with Don Cheadle’s straight-laced FBI agent, Gleeson drives this sharply observed comedy-thriller, the debut feature from writer-director John Michael McDonagh. Beneath the outrageous humour and wonderfully offbeat dialogue, The Guard has plenty to say about Irish identity, class, corruption and the uneasy relationship between Ireland and America.
